Cell Animation

In cell animation each frame is drawn by hand. This is good because you can repeat the same frame which saves a lot of time and effort. The background is often painted and then the characters and objects are layered on top of each other. Popeye is a good example of this you can clearly see the background on loop through the whole animation and you can see the characters and objects on top, these would of been drawn on acetate. This would take a lot of time to make so is not very reliable.

CGI Animation - Computer Generated Imagery

Computer Generated Imagery uses computer graphics to make video games, films, commercials and even TV programmes but the most popular use is to make movies. The scenes can be dynamic or static. CGI is more reliable because you do not have to worry about making clay models that may break and using a computer makes the animations more controllable. To create the illusion of movement a image is left on the computer screen and repeatedly replaced by a new image with a different amount of time frames per second.

Toy Story is a good example of this technique.

Stop Motion Animation

This form of animation uses non moving models and makes them seem like they are moving. Pictures are taken every time the character moves and when they are all joined together they look like they are moving. This is a easy way to do it but takes a long time to put it together.

Wallace and Gromit uses stop motion.

What is a storyboard?

A storyboard is a set of drawings that are put in order and then joined together, they are then used to create a video or animation. Storyboards are often used to make films as they help things to run smoother and are quite easy to use. They are important because without them the animations would not work.

Animatics

An animatic is a shortened version of a film or animation. A story reel uses key frames to create a mini animation this helps the objects or people to move. It is important because you will get an idea of the spaces between each keyframe you need and how to make everything run without any problems.

Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks use animation to make films such as The Lady and The Tramp, Finding Nemo and Shrek.
